Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 3 months ago

The files below contain all of our field notes from all of our interviews in Indermark. It should be noted that the "questions" and "answers" are not verbatim; we chose the Q&A format for the sake of clarity, and were forced also to paraphrase much of what we learned, due to the difficulty of communicating between persons whose first language is not the same (i.e., we speak English and not Sepedi, while all of our interviewees speak Sepedi and bad English if any).

Field Notes 1 - Staff.doc

This file contains notes on our interviews with the staff at the crèche: three teachers, the cook and the gardener. The last staff member, the principal, is Frederica Ralephata, and the notes on our interview with her are in "Field Notes 3."

Field Notes 2 - Parents.doc

This file contains the notes on our interview with several parents of crèche children.

Field Notes 3 - Principal Interview.doc

This file contains the notes on our several interviews with Frederica Ralephata, the principal of Tšwelopele Crèche. It is likely more notes will follow in the weeks and months to come.

Field Notes 4 - Adam Ward.doc

Adam Ward is a former Agricultural Extension Officer who has been extremely helpful in brainstorming organic techniques for fertilization and pest control. He also, subsequent to this interview, gave us numerous printouts on those two topics. Furthermore, he helped us locate Laucky, the current extension officer in our area. Adam has been very enthusiastic, which is energizing for us both.

Field Notes 5 - Laucky.doc

Laucky (surname unknown) is the current Agricultural Extension Officer in this region. He's also a master's student studying composting techniques. He is going to help us with our soil analysis of the crèche garden and will also conduct a training at the crèche on proper gardening technique.

Field Notes 6 - Juniata.doc

Juanita du Plessis is the dietitian at Louis Trichardt Public Hospital. We spoke with her extensively about early childhood nutrition.

Field Notes 7 - Retha.doc

Another conversation with Retha Gaigher, the principle benefactor of the Tšwelopele Crèche.

Field Notes 8 - Staff Follow-Up1.doc

Some follow-up questions to crèche staff.

Field Notes 9 - Laucky, 2.doc

Another interview with Laucky, the agricultural extension officer. Things are looking up with the garden!

Field Notes 10 - Joy Nel.doc

Joy Nel is the manager of Faranani ("Holding Hands Together" in Venda), the training center ("centre") that Frederica attends. She was very helpful.

Field Notes 11 - Retha Gaigher.doc

Yet another conversation with Retha Gaigher, in preparation for our third trip to Indermark.

Field Notes 12 - Selamolela Brothers.doc

Jonas (a retired secondary school teacher) and Jameson (a retired primary school teacher) were interviewed as potential candidates to teach English at the crèche.

Field Notes 13 - Johannes.doc

Johannes and Frederica were both briefly interviewed to determine the acceptability of utilizing solar cookers at Tšwelopele.

Field Notes 14 - Frederica Ralephata.doc

We had numerous conversations with Frederica during the two days and three nights we spent in her home in Indermark; those conversations are consolidated here into one "interview."

Field Notes 15 - Adam Ward 2.doc

This is when Adam Ward blew our minds.
