Crèche Project

The Tswelopele crèche is located in Indermark, a poor rural community in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The Tswelopele crèche has over 160 children and only 4 teachers. Due to the high ratio of children to teachers, it is hard to create a structured education program. Although the crèche currently attempts to teach the children English, it has had little success. Some of the teachers do not even know basic English and those that do lack the training to teach it. Other factors such as malnourishment and health ailments such as HIV/AIDS deter the children from effectively learning.

One way in addressing this need is to bring in Masters of Education students with English and special interest skills such as health, environment, and/or music, etc., from local universities. These individuals will serve as student teachers and instruct the crèche children in learning English. They will teach by means of incorporating the individual Master student’s area of interest. The master students will be able to use their experience as student teachers to complete the practicum required for their Masters degree at their home university.

Additionally we will help improve the nutrition of the crèche children by seeking to supplement their primary diet of "pap" or maize porridge with vegetables, beans, etc. We hope to accomplish this by helping to improve the quality of their garden. We will consult with local farmers and doctors to obtain all the information necessary to conduct this part of the project.

Additionally, take a look at these new documents below, which discuss (1) the history of the crèche ; (2) a socio-economic profile of Indermark; and (3) a look at some strengths and weaknesses of the Tswelopele crèche.

Below is our project timeline, or "Gantt Chart", which details generally when we expect to have each activity within our Management Plan completed.

Figure 1. Gantt Chart. This is our project timeline. I hope the key at the top is self-explanatory.

You may notice that two activities, A1 (under Objective 1) and A9 (under Objective 3), have no projected end-date. This is because (for O1A1) Retha Gaigher will be pursuing this independently after we have left Limpopo. We intend to set aside project funds for her to implement this after we have left. As for O3A9, we have decided it is not feasible, for a variety of reasons, and are putting it aside.

You might notice that, in addition to the two items marked "Indeterminate", there are three items that should be "Finished!" but are not. The first, "Control Pests", relates to buying aromatic herbs that dissuade insects from attacking nearby crops. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have been unable to purchase and plant such seeds - but we expect that Retha and Ian Gaigher will take care of this in the new year. The second, "Plant Fruit Trees", also turned out to be a bit beyond our control, as our agricultural extension officer repeatedly "forgot" to look into that for us. We have a promise from Retha to look into that for next year. The final item, "Solar Cooker", is awaiting a quote from a "holidaymaking" (vacationing) solar cooker provider. He will transport the cooker and conduct a training into its proper use in late January, under the supervision of Retha Gaigher. So that's that!
